THE Hot Press “Best of Ireland 2013″ guide has named the Anam Cara Writer’s and Artist’s Retreat in West Cork one of Ireland’s “Best Alternative Stays”.
Anam Cara — which means “soul friend” in Irish — overlooks Coulagh Bay and the mountains and farmlands of the Beara Peninsula.
Owner Sue Booth-Forbes moved to West Cork from Boston 15 years ago to set up the retreat for novice and experienced writers and artists.
Booth-Forbes is an experienced writer and editor who began her editing career at Cambridge University Press.
Booth-Forbes said, “Anam Cara is the kind of place where painters have been known to begin writing and writers to begin painting.
“Most guests come to Anam Cara with a project in mind and follow working hours of nine to five with shared meals, and then in the evening share their work in front of a turf fire.”
In addition to retreats, Anam Cara hosts workshops, group visits and special events.
