The Emerging

I came to this country
and in the tired dark
immediately began to do things differently
leaving open the window for the water sound
leaving open the curtains for the land

(For at night a distant twinkling had caught my eye
and a moth from a song flew by).

I slept well but drifted
already thinking of purpose and excited;
and, two hours too early, at six
threw a glance at the land

It was coming up from grey
like four grey horses riding up in a line
like content before form
taking shape
taking shapes

And in the morning of course there was
Revelation:
But I still see the grey horses
Treasure the moment of formation
that verbal noun form
The emerging
